I was nervous for this race because June had been a rough training month. I hadn’t done much because my husband has his surgery to remove a bone tumor. This event was different because I was camping out before the event. I had never done that before a race before so I didn’t know what to expect.
The night before was a blast. Saw many friends, had lots of laughs and even saw my friend Karen for the first time in forever! I sat around the camp fire with Wally and Mark talking triathlons and life.
The next morning we got up and literally walked to the transition area. That was nice!! Other team mates had to ride their bikes to the tranisition area because they weren’t letting cars in. So walking over was an advantage.
It was a BEAUTIFUL July day. I headed down to the lake to watch the waves start with the Olympic. It was time to hit the water and boy was it warm. My swim felt strong. I was in sync and felt great. Running up the ramp was a little bit of comedy, I had to find my flip flops to run into transition.
I hit the bike and took off. Despite not riding much during June, my body remembered. At the turn around I caught up with my friend Kristin, who is AMAZING and rode with her for a few miles. Then she kicked my trash up the hill. But that’s okay. I jumped of the bike and started out on the run. What… my legs felt great….that’s never happened before. So I ran!! It was nice because it was a trail and felt good on my feet, but the heat of the day was setting in. I was excited to see the aid station and get some water. I looked at my watch and realized I making awesome time. That motivated me to really turn up the run. I sprinted that last mile as fast as I could.
I crosed the finish line and cheered the rest of my team in. As results came in, I was thrilled to see 4th place. But once again, that 4th place and not in the top 3. Ugh! I am too competitive but in my age group, you have to bring it.
